Alcohol addiction

Forget about crack, cocaine, speed, and heroin. Alcohol is the most widely abused drug in the world and alcoholism is the number one drug problem. Alcoholism is the third largest killer in the world and would probably be number one if blood alcohol levels were determined for all victims of suicide, homicide, and car wrecks.

Although alcoholism varies from person to person, the disease begins with social drinking. The alcoholic develops a tolerance and requires more drinks to stay high. Personality changes also occur. The shy, dependent person may become abusively aggressive when drunk. The pleasant, easygoing friend may become despondent and depressed with alcohol. Relationships with the alcoholic deteriorate. Denial is a theme throughout the progression of the disease. Then deception begins – sneaking drinks, hiding stashes of liquor, becoming angry if drinking time is cut short.

Alcoholics gradually lose control over their drinking. Once addicted, no amount of reason or logic can stop it. Alcoholic self-destructive behavior is a mystery to family and friends. Alcoholism affects all walks of life, all social strata. Because this disease is progressive, often taking years to develop, most alcoholics are able to maintain their jobs, though their family life may have disintegrated much earlier.

Low cholestrol problem

If you are a middle aged man, and if your total cholesterol is below 160, you might want to ask your doctor to check whether you are one of the rare individuals for whom this could pose a problem.

And if you are that rare man at risk, you may in fact need to consume a little more saturated fat and cholesterol than current recommended levels. There simply isn’t any evidence about what effect low cholesterol and high blood pressure might have on women or younger people. It’s likely, however, that their risk is much lower. There’s one other subgroup of population among whom low cholesterol should be a concern. In elderly men, ultralow cholesterol may be a marker for reduced immune function. It’s likely that both their cholesterol and their immune function are so low because they don’t have much of an appetite and aren’t eating a proper diet.

These people should be examined thoroughly by a physician and, depending on the findings, should possibly be put on a higher-fat diet. If you are a healthy adult, with no personal or family history of hypertension or cardiovascular disease and good health habits, then your cholesterol should ideally be no higher than 200. At 200, you have half the normal risk for heart disease.

Fighting cancer the natural way

A substance produced in the human breast to inhibit hormone-stimulated cell growth is being eyed as a future breast cancer treatment.

The substance is called mammastatin, a protein made by human mammary cells. If scientists can figure out exactly how mammastatin production is triggered, in theory they may be able to make breast cancer cells switch themselves off.

When a cell becomes cancerous, it grows and divides uncontrollably. In effect, the growth-inducing hormones in the cell overpower the growth-regulating hormones. According to laboratory tests at the University of Michigan Cancer center, it seems that a relatively small counter dose of mammastatin may inhibit this uncontrolled cell growth. One application of mammastatin inhibited cell reproduction by 21 to 61 percent! Mammastatin was effective only against cancer cells taken from the breast – it didn’t have much of an effect against cancer cells taken from other parts of the body. Another curious quirk: Mammastatin may be useful in predicting who’s at greatest risk of breast cancer. All women have mammastatin in their bodies. A certain amount of it circulates through the blood stream. Some women have a lot; some, only a little. The Michigan researchers are trying to see if there’s a link between these blood levels and the development of cancer.

Drugs for Blood pressure

If blood pressure-lowering medications are necessary, the next step is to determine which drug will work best for you. Fortunately, today, we have dozens of different drugs to choose from. Diuretics drugs increase the excretion of sodium and water by kidneys. They thereby reduce the volume of blood in the arteries and veins and consequently lower blood pressure. Also loss of sodium in the blood vessel walls may help dilate them and thereby help lower blood pressure.

Thiazide diuretics are the most commonly used and are well tolerated by most patients. The so called loop diuretics usually are reserved for patients whose blood pressure is not controlled with thiazide diuretics or who have kidney complications or heart failure. A third class is called the potassium-sparing diuretics. They are mostly used along with a thiazide or loop diuretic to help the body retain potassium while eliminating excessive sodium. Diuretics alone lower blood pressure in about 40 to 50 percent of hypertensive persons. When used in combination with other drugs, their success rate increases.

Advances in cardiac electrophysiology are occurring so frequently now that researchers are building on each other’s breakthroughs, constructing a pyramid of medical achievements that none would have thought possible just a decade ago.

As an example, clinical and laboratory investigators have produced computer-created, three dimensional depictions of the stages and breakdowns in normal performance as a healthy heart deteriorates into an arrhythmic mass of uncadenced muscle. And on an even more vial plateau that has immediate import for patients with arrhythmias, scientists have created a device called an automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD). A 3-inch –wide piece of titanium that is embedded under a patient’s skin near the abdomen and plugged into the heart with the electrodes, the AICD continuously monitors the electrical activity of the ventricles. When the internal rhythm becomes dangerously fast, without prompting, the device delivers a counter shock that normalizes the pulse beat. The one-year arrhythmia mortality rate of patients with arrhythmias who have had cardioventer defibrillators installed is a meager 2 percent. Dr. Hein Wellens is the first person to ambitiously research sudden cardiac death and the use of electrophysiological techniques in patients with Ventricular tachycardia.

Rebel of the nature

Has anybody understood nature? Have anyone tried to? Well, many of us have tried it. But the real fact is that those many of us are unable to digest the truth that when you try challenge the nature, it obviously wins over you. That’s true to the core. Man has never been an enemy to vegetarianism.

A person who is a non vegetarian never says that vegetarian food is not healthy. But does the vice versa proves true. NO. Why is that so? A PETA activist who understands the torture rendered to a chicken that is being killed to be served at KFC is reluctant to accept the fact that many of their so called healthy vegetarian food stuff bought at similar US based restaurant chains are bio engineered and are not healthy.

Well not exactly the French fries and nuggets and mushroom pies, but the ingredients are. They are not ready to accept that bio engineered vegetables, though they are tasty and healthy are victims of modern age holocaust. Bio engineering a man is unacceptable, but a food which is processed and grown similarly is accepted as a foodstuff by all vegetarian lovers.

They never understand that we are testing nature’s ability to stay healthy. We are crucifying nature by introducing bio engineering into it. Nature has its own way to kick our ass. Blend of its anger has already shown its mighty light through the ozone. We are yet to see the rest. A strict vegetarian who dislikes killing animals is ready to keep the vegetables in a refrigerator. Does a frozen food keep him healthy? He would die at an early age than his counterpart (non vegetarian). If bio engineering vegetables and crumpling its growth inside a incubator room is acceptable then KFC still serves good and healthy chicken.

Dawn of the Man

How would a Stone Age ape (man) have survived? Did he ever catch a cold? Did he have wheezing problem? Had he been diagnosed with chicken pox? Did he have unsafe sex with another ape? Or was there any alternative for a condom at that period? Were there any vegetarians at that point of time? Who knows? But he stayed healthy! Are we quite sure about that too? NO. Staying healthy had never been on the agenda of a Stone Age man. His options were less.

Or to be precise, he had only one option. To survive. Survival became vital. He never wanted to show off his six-pack abs to his girl. But he still stayed fit. Archeologists proved that. If a guy’s skull and bones are to be found without much damage till date, he must be one hell of a healthy ape. Almost all apes were healthy. Why? The answer is food. Do you know that you can eat French fries daily and still can survive till the age of 70 or 80 without any cardiac related diseases? That’s true only when you love your body. You need to love to stay healthy.

Exercise is the keyword to all healthy apes. Not that they did push ups and abdominal crunches and jogging. But they integrated the exercises into their daily agenda (Hunting…the only one). They ran; they bent themselves; they worked for shelter and food. So the keyword to stay fit or healthy is to work. Keep yourself active. Lessen your sleep. Eat variety of food. Drink water. Stay away from alcohol and cigarette. Perhaps you could stay some 10 years more than you would have planed to stay here.

An extract of the Chinese cucumber plant is being tested to see if it can inhibit or even kill the AIDS virus in infected immune-system cells without harming normal cells. A researcher at the Chinese university of Honk Kong discovered that trichosanthin, a protein extracted from the root of the Chinese cucumber plant, was able to cripple macrophages, a type of white blood cells. He brought this to the attention of the director of Aids immunobiology research laboratory at San Francisco General Hospital. In laboratory studies, the San Francisco group discovered that the ingredient GLZ223 seemed to block reproduction of the AIDS virus in T-cells, another component of the immune system.

Hiv - Aids

While that’s an important step in combating the virus, only a small percentage of T-cells become infected, and they usually die off soon afterward. Clinical trials to determine the safety and effectiveness of various injected doses of GLQ223 have begun at the University of California, San Francisco, and San Francisco General Hospital. Experts caution that without medical supervision, using substances derived from the Chinese cucumber – sometime called “compound Q” – can be extremely dangerous.

People suffering from diabetics should have a strong vigil on their food intake. If they follow a well planned and controlled diet, the ill effects of the diabetics can be greatly reduced. The amounts of Carbohydrates, Fat and Sugar taken everyday in the food should be strictly watched. Bitter Guard has to be included in the diet. Potatoes and Breads have to be kept from the diabetic patients. They should stay away from all kinds of aerated drinks. Fresh juices can be taken with out adding sugar to it.

If needed, artificial sweeteners can be used. They can have fresh vegetable salads that would provide them with all the essential nutrients needed and the calorie intake with these vegetable salads is also less. Most importantly, these vegetable salads have to be consumed within two to three hours after its preparation. They can drink fresh hot vegetable soups also. Soups made of tomato, mushroom, soya and chicken can be taken on a regular basis. Vegetables like Carrot and Beetroot should be avoided in their diet as these vegetables contain high levels of sugar in them. High Fat and carbohydrate content in the food has to be replaced with protein levels. Just watch your diet with a little extra care to fight diabetics!
